Be Sure You Know The Different Supplemental Car Hire Charges

Most car hire companies require certain terms and conditions to be met, such as the need for a vehicle to be returned in virtually the same condition as it was taken, for the vehicle not to be driven beyond a certain distance, and for the car itself to be returned with a full tank of petrol. All companies require a driver to hold a valid driving licence, although most also have a minimum age for all customers, which is often far higher than the country's minimum legal driving age. Indeed, there are car hire firms which require the driver to be as old as 25.

There is a standard charge for car hire, which varies depending on the vehicle size and the length of the hire period. The fee also covers the bare basics of insurance, as required by law. Payment is usually made by credit card, to enable the car hire firm to easily trace a customer who absconds with a hire vehicle and to make it easier for the firm to recoup money if there is later found to be damage or some other problem with the car.

However, there are also different kinds of optional supplemental charges that the car hire customer may be offered and it is as well to be familiar with them. Some are more useful than others for the average driver but they may well provide extra peace of mind – and if the worst happens, will turn out to have been a smart investment.

The optional extra payments are, by and large, there to provide various forms of additional insurance and waivers against different types of accident during the car hire period. A Loss Damage Waiver or Collision Damage Waiver charge is one of the more common supplements. This is intended to cover all costs in the event of the hire vehicle suffering damage in an accident. Sometimes the charge covers all costs incurred, while other companies stipulate that an "excess" fee is payable on the first few hundred pounds worth of damage. Paying a little more usually means that this excess fee will also be waived.

Car hire in the USA often features Supplemental Liability Insurance, which gives the customer coverage for accidents that cause physical injury or damage the property of a third party. Given the litigation culture and high medical costs in the US, this can be a wise option. A similar charge is Personal Accident Insurance, which will cover any medical costs incurred for injuries and even death suffered by the customer and any passengers in the vehicle at the time.

Car Hire Usa Insurance Questions

Hi do you need an international driving licence for USA and and additional insurance cover?

May or may not drive while in USA. If hiring a car would the car hire firm sell you Insurance or do you need to get it before you travel and as well as British Licence have to get an International one.

Your normal uk full driving licence is fine. if you hire a car they will sell you the insurance for it.
I would advise you to organise car hire before you go as it would be easier. if your going to florida i would recommend you hiring a car as everywhere is a distance and its really easy to drive over there. we went in january and i drove 850 miles in two weeks.

We go to USA each winter and hire a car . Is there an alternative to hiring which would save money?

We go to Florida where our kids and grandchildren are and always hire a car for the duration for independence. Would it be better to buy a car and try to sell it afterwards? What are the problems associated with that such as USA insurance which we presume would have to be for a year with little return if we cancel after 3 months? Anyone doing this or something similar? Regards and thanks.

If you are coming each year I would purchase a nice used car and leave it parked at one of your children's house (or a storage facility) while you are back home. most policies you have to buy for 6 months...but talk with an insurace agent about how it will only be on the road 3 months a year and see what they can do for you.

If you leave the car with one of your children they could go out and start it a few times a year to keep it in running condition.
