6 Top Road Trip Destinations In Qld

Queensland is one of the biggest states in Australia, physically. When it comes to attractions and activities, though, there is little doubt that Queensland has it all! Almost every iconic Australian experience can be had in Queensland, from camping amongst gum forests, to snorkelling on coral reefs, to relaxing on pristine beaches, experiencing outback sunsets and stargazing, or trekking through rainforest. We narrow the field to the top 6 destinations that are worth packing your bags, updating your car insurance, filling up the tank and hitting the road for!

Fraser Island
Fraser Island is only 400 kms from Brisbane, and has one of the mildest climates of all our Queensland road trip destinations. It does get a little humid, but year round temperatures hover around 25-30C. Fraser Island has plenty to do - check out:

  • The Cathedrals coloured sand formations
  • Champagne Pools rock pools for swimming
  • Dugongs, humpback whales and turtles in the water - go snorkelling or hire some scuba gear on the island.
  • The Maheno shipwreck

Port Douglas
Port Douglas is just north of Cairns - a quieter, more low-key destination for your road trip. You'll definitely need a couple of drivers to get here from Brisbane  - don't forget to add your extras to your car insurance! While in Port Douglas, don't forget to:

  • Check out Four Mile Beach and have a swim in front of the surf-lifesaving club - safe from stingers!
  • Plan a few day trips to the Daintree rainforest
  • Make your way up to Cape Tribulation for a night or two
  • Check out a glass-bottomed boat tour, or snorkelling tour

Burketown
Burketown is incredibly remote, only 25km from the coast of the Gulf of Carpenteria. Drive during the dry season … not even the highest level of insurance cover will prevent your car being bogged beyond retrieval on some of the roads during the wet! Have a drink at all of the surrounding pubs, and relax on some of the most isolated beaches in Australia.

Longreach
Longreach is a true taste of the Australian outback, home to the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame, Cobb and Co coach rides, and a campus of the Australian Agricultural college.

Stanthorpe/Tenterfield
Though Queensland in general is not known for snow, Stanthorpe can be! The weather most of the year round, though, is absolutely perfect; especially for activities like:

  • Hiking or picnicking in Bald Rock and Boonoo Boonoo National Parks
  • Checking out local vineyards and wineries
  • Chilling out in one of the many self-contained accommodation options

Townsville
The Townsville region encompasses the coast, the ocean, the outback as well as the gorgeous Queensland bush. If you want to get in the ocean in Townsville, make sure you go between May and October - the summer and autumn months are stinger season, where irukandji and box jellyfish abound in the ocean. While in Townsville, make sure you:

  • Check out Wallaman Falls, Australia's tallest sheer drop waterfall
  • Look for platypus, cassowaries and koalas while hiking
  • Keep an eye out for dolphins and dugongs if you go in the water
  • Swim with the gropers at the SS Yongala Dive site

Queensland road trips mean long drives, up-to-date car insurance and at least a couple of mates … but they are real memory-makers!
